Bryan Charnley (1949-1991).
Morning Flight (1983).
Although he is best known for the series of pictures that he painted when he took himself off treatment in order to experience his schizophrenia in its fullest form - a process that led to his suicide - Morning Flight is one of Bryan Charnley's more allegorical paintings. Through these images he was attempting to portray his innermost feelings. As described on the website dedicated to his life and work (www.bryancharnley.info): 'It was important to Bryan that he was understood because while schizophrenia is outside of normal experience the sufferer is in no way insulated from feeling'. With thanks to Terence Charnley and to the Bethlem Hospital Archives and Museum for permission to reprint the picture.
