Schizophrenia in a 47, XYY Male

RAYMOND FABER M.D.1 and RICHARD ABRAMS M.D.2

1 Resident in Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, New York Medical College, Metropolitan Hospital Center, 1901 First Avenue, New York, New York 10029, U.S.A.
2 Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, State University of New York, Stony Brook, New York

A case of schizophrenia in a 47,XYY male diagnosed according to strict phenomenological criteria is presented. The authors suggest that the 47,XYY chromosome anomaly should be added to the list of possible causes of symptomatic schizophrenia, and express the hope that future investigations of the effects of an extra Y chromosome on brain function will yield clues as to the aetiology of idiopathic schizophrenia.
