Sixty poor-prognosis schizophrenic probands and their first-degree relatives were systematically interviewed blindly with regard to the subtypes of the probands. Comparisons were made between 32 paranoid probands and their families and 28 non-paranoid probands and their families. Besides definitional differences, paranoid probands had a later age of onset and a shorter total duration of stay in hospital. The only family differences between the two groups was a greater risk for the combination of schizophrenia, undiagnosed psychosis and paranoid personality in the non-paranoid group. The authors found no tendency for like subtype to go with like, nor any association between subtype and non-psychotic disorders.
