A Trial of Bendrofluazide in Depression

DAVID WHEATLEY M.D.1

1 Head of the General Practitioner Research Group, 325 Staines Road, Twickenham, TW2 5AX

It was concluded that combining bendrofluazide with amitriptyline did not result in any enhanced therapeutic effect in these depressed patients. However, it is not known whether there is any interaction between bendrofluazide and amitriptyline that might produce an adverse therapeutic effect. Therefore, there is still a possibility than bendrofluazide alone might exert an antidepressant effect. In view of the completely negative results recorded in this trial, such a study could only be justified with supervised patients in hospital.
