Five cases of abuse of ergotamine preparations and one of methysergide are reported. Abuse of methysergide has not previously been reported. The effects of tolerance and withdrawal headaches as factors contributing to the abuse of these drugs are discussed. Attention is drawn to the dangers of such abuse in patients who are unduly anxious and are subjected to prolonged stress. The need to treat the patient as a whole is emphasized in relationship to the prevention of abuse of antimigraine drugs and to the management of such abuse if it develops.
